VMware – Changes At The Top

screenshot301Following on from VMware CTO Steve Herrod’s announcement that he is to leave his role, I joked on twitter that this was actually a response to the prospect of being accosted by Gregg Robertson and Darren Woollard at VMworld again about putting in an appearance at a London VMUG. I didn’t expect a response from him on account of the hundreds of other tweets he must have received, but the fact that I got one suggests to me that Dr Herrod is still fairly grounded despite having been instrumental in the establishment and growth of a very successful company whose developments have shaped IT and my career to date. Thank you.

Dr Herrod’s departure will raise questions about the future direction of VMware for sure. He joined the company in 2001 and moved into the role of CTO only a few months before Paul Maritz became CEO. Between them they oversaw a period of fantastic change that has continued past Paul Maritz’s step down last year.

I don’t think that Dr Herrod’s leaving is directly connected to last year’s change of CEO though. Look at the journey that VMware has made over the last 11 years, how they’ve grown from a one product company to an industry leader with a product portfolio to die for (in my opinion at least). However you measure success, VMware have achieved it and it’s not unreasonable for someone who has helped built up a great team around them to consider their work there done. That’s my take on it at least.

Yes, it’ll be interesting to see who steps into Dr Herrod’s shoes – they’re big – but I don’t think there’s much to worry about yet.

By the way Mr Gelsinger, I’m available any day next week (except Thursday – London VMUG) for an interview ;)

UKVMUG 2012 Agenda

The dust has barely settled on VMworld Europe and the Agenda for next month’s UKVMUG in Birmingham has been posted. There are multiple tracks and some big names presenting in addition to the valued event sponsors.

It’ll be difficult picking between everything that’s going on. For instance should I go for Duncan and Frank’s Deep-Dive discussion, Alan and William’s Practical Automation session or Hugo and Aidan’s VCDX Boot Camp? And that’s just breakout block #2!

It’s interesting that there are Community sessions scheduled alongside Sponsor ones. I imagine this might be in response to some feedback from last year’s event or perhaps from more recent VMUGs.

Anyway, I’ve copied the Agenda below for easy reference. But if you haven’t registered yet, why not? It’s free! Register here…

VMworld Europe 2012 in Pictures

As I did last year, here are some photos that I snapped during VMworld Europe 2012…

VMworld Europe 2012 – Thank You

It’s all over for another year. I’ve had a great time meeting people and learning a thing or two. Before I forget them though, I wanted to say a few “thank you”s. In no particular order they are:

  • Virtual Clarity, my employer, for supporting my attendance here.
  • My wife and family for letting me go almost a week without speaking to them properly!
  • Fira Barcelona – it’s a big space and I’ve heard some people complaining that they’ve had to do a lot of walking but I didn’t come here expecting to sit down all day. The event staff have been good and I thank them all for putting up with so many foreign geeks.
  • Josh Atwell, Damian Karlson and Alastair Cooke for putting on a series of great vBrownbag presentations.
  • All of the speakers for putting together so many great sessions.
  • The vendors / sponsors / solutions providers who make IT great. I didn’t stop at every booth but I had great conversations with lots of them.
  • The event organizers who have spent the best part of a year making VMworld happen.
  • John Troyer, the godfather of the VMware community
  • Alex Maier, she may have moved on from VMware but she helped all of the vExperts so much and helped get me here this year.
  • VMware – Thank you for continuing to innovate!

I’m looking forward to next year already. Whether it be in San Francisco or Barcelona (the 2013 Europe conference location isn’t known yet) – let’s see…

QNAP Gets VAAI

I purposefully wandered past the QNAP booth in the Solutions Exchange at VMworld Europe 2012 yesterday as I have one of their devices at home connected up to my lab (although as it gets older and my demands get higher I find that I’m using it less and less). I also know a few other individuals (e.g. Jeremy – co-author on this site) who have one in their home lab setup and QNAP have a good presence in the SMB market.

As the title suggests, QNAP are going to deliver VAAI functionality very shortly. The really good thing though is that this does not mean that you need to buy a new model. As QNAP use the same OS package on all of their devices, the whole range will get the functionality as of version 3.8. Geeks (with QNAPs) everywhere will rejoice and dance in the streets!

I plan to pop back past later on and find out more about it.
